"Subversive Humor" Special Session at the 40th International Congress
on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan, May 5-8, 2005.

Papers in this session will examine medieval and early modern texts
in which the author uses humor to undermine cultural expectations
about gender, class, religion, politics, etc. This panel is
particularly interested in comic practices that do _not_ conform to
the commonly understood (and overused) notions of carnival. How else
was humor deployed to mask subversive or even revolutionary ideas?

Please send a 1-2 page abstract by September 15 either by email or
