In the past few years, studies in social interaction and the exercise of
power have expanded to embrace the spatial dimension of social action. As
a consequence, maps are now considered both sources and tools of analysis
also within fields other than geography and cartography.

The symposium Mapping Early Modern Interaction and Relationships,
to be held in Jyväskylä on the 23rd and 24th of November 2007, will
address these themes. The symposium is organized by the project
of Brothers, Neighbours and Friends - Political Culture and Strategies of
Influence in Early Modern Sweden, funded by the Academy of Finland.

Focusing on the time span of circa 1400 to 1700, the symposium will
with such topics as the geography of networks in local communities, the
spatial dimensions of individual agency, the mapping of communication and
the distribution of information. Different approaches and
multidisciplinary contributions are welcomed.

Interested scholars are invited to propose a paper of approximately 20
minutes by sending an abstract of roughly 300 words to the following email
address: by the end of March 2007, with
"Mapping: Proposal" in the subject header.
