Google books
07.03.2007 at 09:16:55

As Google books  has become more useful, is by far more useful now than it was after it started, and as the co-operation with Bayerische Staatsbibliothek will probably contribute to make it even more useful in the future: I guess I should add it here:

The German version is at URL http://books.google.de/ and the international version is at URL http://books.google.com/ .

One should note that the results of one and the same search in both versions may differ. (books.google.fr at first glance seems to provide the same results the German version does give you.)

Does anybody amongst you know, whether the plans to "integrate" the various google searches mentioned i. a. at  http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=3625897 and http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/89855 and http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/internet/05/17/google.search.reut/index.html are intended to be extended to google books and google scholar?

The 2008-09-22 inside google booksearch posting by Alex Diaz "Book Search everywhere with new partnerships and tools" might be of interest in this context too, although, as far as I understand it, it's main focus seems to be on commercial enterprises.

Quote:

We're launching a set of free tools that allow retailers, publishers, and anyone with a web site to embed books from the Google Book Search index. We are also providing new ways for these sites to display full-text search results from Book Search, and even integrate with social features such as ratings, reviews, and readers' book collections.

But, on the other hand:
Quote:
Beyond these retailer partnerships, we've also worked with a wide array of sites and organizations to bring Book Search functionality to their users:

* Library catalogs. It is now possible to preview books—including a huge number of works in the public domain—right from the online catalogs of the University of California and the University of Texas, as well as through WorldCat.org, a service that lets you search across the collections of more than 10,000 local and institutional libraries worldwide.

And:
Quote:
Of course, we know that even more sites will also want to work with the Book Search index in ways we can't even imagine. That's why we've made these tools an open set of APIs, which anyone can use to build applications drawing on the unique search results and preview capabilities provided by Book Search. If you'd like to try out these APIs on your website, check out our brand new developer site.

Now see also http://ask.metafilter.com/106411/Google-search-with-many-results (a report on and discussion of inconsistent information about the number of hits for certain searches, found thanks to http://archiv.twoday.net/stories/5314133/ ).

In my own day to day praxis: I use google books mainly for citation searches and I found and find it to be a really great (though admittedly not perfect) tool for searching for books citing a certain other text.
