Future migration to YaBB 2.2
09.11.2007 at 14:24:58

As those of you who are interested in technical details probably will have noted: Web4Ren Forum (W4RF) is made, works and runs using the software YaBB 2.1

As some of you may already know: on 2007-11-08 YaBB 2.2 was published (i.e. a new and improved version).

Some time in the future Web4Ren Forum (W4RF) will migrate from YaBB  2.1 to YaBB  2.2.
This will need some preparation, which will need some time. (Which is the reason why the migration will not happen durin the next few days (and probably not even during the next few weeks. As of now I'd say: "mid February 2008 or earlier".)
The migration will not be a minor affair, and although I hope to be able to do it rather smoothly: it certainly will not be completely smooth. It will involve making  Web4Ren Forum (W4RF) unavailable for some time (15 minutes if everything should go as expected, perhaps considerably longer if not). And it is to be expected that ion the das and weeks aftger migration some problems which I did not foresee during the preparation will arise, and I don't know how fast I'll be able to solve them. (YaBB has a great support community. But that does not make severe erfrors on my side impossible.)
So: please: when the time of migration comes: please have some patience. Thanks in advance!

Any input by anyone who already has some experience with migrating a somewhat non-standard YaBB version 2.1 forum to YaBB version 2.2 of course would also be welcome ... .

Due to the importance of the functioning of the RSS-feeds for Web4Ren Forum (W4RF): in view of the problem discussed here I'll postpone upgrading to 2.2 at least until that problem is resolved.

The XaBB developers are moving rather fast: this forum mis still using YaBB Version 2.1, the most recent current version is 2.2.3, and they were even planing to release YaBB 2.3 on October 5th (i.e. yesterday: see http://www.yabbforum.com/community/?board=general;action=display;num=1222972957 ).

So: I guess: for this forum here there will be no migration to one of the 2.2 versions, but an update to some stable 2.3 version sometime during the next few weeks or months.

Unless you see some reason to proceed differently ... . In case you do: please let me know: either via a reply to this posting here, or via PM, or via email. Thanks in advance!

As YaBB 2.1 Forum Software (the software used for Web4Ren Forum (W4RF)) runs stable and well also on our new server, and as we never had any major problems with this version, and as I found no points where the newer versions are very much superior to the present one in its present (modified) state, and as YaBB is being in rather fast continuous development (now having reached version 2.3.1): there is quite some probability that any migration of this forum here to a more recent version of YaBB will be postponed until there are rather compelling reasons for such a move.

If you, the members of this forum here, should think you know about such reasons: please let me know. Thanks in advance!!
