RES: Rinascimentalium Epistolarum studii

Over at facebook there is a group called RES: Rinascimentalium Epistolarum studii. That group is not open to the public. However: if you want to join: its URL is https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=53365697869 .

But: Activity over there is not extremely high, and I fear/expect that group to loose most of its remaining usefulness due to its imminent conversion to fb's new groups format and functionalities.

Hence I'll use this thread here  to archive select content from that group (select posts by me both to the "wall" and to various discussion threads there).

Much of this will be done by rather "dirty" cut and paste, and part of the content will probably be lost or disfigured. I just don't have enough time available to do it properly. Sorry about that. Please accept my apologies, etc. etc. pp.. Sorry again.

I'll also use this thread here to post in future about items of potential interest to those interested in renaissance letter writing. Feel free to participate!

I guess sometime in the rather near future I'll copy my contributions to this group over to Web4Ren Forum (W4RF) (as a subsection of the section " The interesting stuff").

The reason is that I'll probably leave facebook rather soon after G+ is open to the public and accommodates institutional accounts on G+.

Discussion then can continue both here and on W4RF (and of course in other places).

If you want me to copy *your* contributions to W4RF too: please let me know.

If as of now you are not a member of W4RF, and want me to create an account for you there: please let me know.

If as of now you are not (yet) on G+ and want me to send you an invitation: please let me know.

From a discussion a few moments ago on Twitter (espec. with esteinhauer@ & wimbauer): One of the main differences between the Renaissance letters this group is about and nowadays partially parallel somethings might be that those letters left permanent (material) traces, whereas our discussions via fb, email, etc. etc. pp.most probably will be lost to those writing 500 years in the future.

‎@Anja: As you'll probably know: Quite a number of prints/copies of (mainly 16th cent.) editions of Cicero's letters have been digitised at MDZ: perhaps they (their materia praefatoria and ms. underlines etc.) can help some concerning the use of Cicero's letters in school contexts.
Concerning the bibliography: some census of 15th-17th century collections of letters is part of what "my" project should provide. However: this would/will be vast: if you have access to the new edition of Melanchthon's letters (by Scheible et al.) and look for the prints and major collections (Camerarius and beyond) they used ... . IMO: this needs a database infrastructure, not a "mere" list or blog.

First of the "Fundstücke" threads, March to June 2009

Heinrich C. Kuhn
I guess a thread with items we have become arware of re4cently might be useful.
And I'll start it:
At
http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/0003/bsb00034971/images/
you can find a digitised version of
Camerarius, Joachim: Delectae quaedam graecae Epistolae, Tubinga, 1540 [VD16 C 390]
BSB-Signatur A.gr.c. 136

From
http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/0003/bsb00034971/images/index.html?id=00 034971&seite=83
onwards there are C.'s translations into Latin.

The 1532 print "Opuscula aliquot" by Pietro Bembo (digitised at
http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/0003/bsb00034198/images/
) contain (according to the TOC) i.a. "epistolae aliquot elegantissimae".

These letters start at
http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/0003/bsb00034198/images/index.html?id=00 034198&seite=256

Yes, this is extremely interesting (and I wouldn't have found it myself (too "late")). Lots of thanks!!!
Do you (or does anybody else here know) whether anybody from Michael Stolberg's Ärztebriefeprojekt (see e.g.
http://www.phil-hum-ren.uni-muenchen.de/W4RF/YaBB.pl?num=1225184562%2F0#0
) is here on facebook, and "approachable"?

Unter
http://www.medizingeschichte.uni-wuerzburg.de/neuigkeiten.html

Panel on Historical Social Network Analysis at the AHA (January 6-9,2011, Boston)
Location: Massachusetts, United States
Date Submitted: 2009-10-30
Announcement ID: 171635
I am organizing a panel on the uses of social network analysis in historical scholarship to submit to the 2011 meeting of the AHA. The development of SNA programs capable of handling very large networks, paired with large-scale digitization projects, has opened up the possibility of using this technique to analyze large bodies of relational data, whether networks of individuals or institutions or textual networks. My work uses the SNA program Pajek to analyze participants in a criminal network in a particularly violent county in the reconstruction-era United States. Since this panel will be organized around this type of analysis rather than around a particular subject matter, I would love to hear from anyone currently using SNA. If you might be interested in participating, please send me a cv and a brief formal or informal description of your SNA project.

Project:
The Letters of Bess of Hardwick
:
"
Elizabeth, countess of Shrewsbury (c.1522-1608), known as ‘Bess of Hardwick’, is one of Elizabethan England most famous figures. She is renowned for her reputation as an indomitable matriarch and dynast and perhaps best known as the builder of great stately homes like the magnificent Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth House. The story of her life as told to date takes little account of her more than 230 letters. The aim of the project is to make these letters accessible by producing a searchable, interactive online edition of all ca. 230 letters written to and from Bess of Hardwick.

The Letters of Bess of Hardwick Online will go live, freely and openly available to all, in summer 2011. The website will be accompanied by publications, online resources and podcasts which will introduce, comment upon and offer analyses of the letters.

RES: Campanini: In forma di lettere: finzione epis
Reply #12 - 04.10.2011 at 11:23:58

Information about a new book, received thanks to the authoress:

Magda Campanini:

all’invenzione narrativa.
narrativa.

RES: Cfp: Early Modern Social Networks

At http://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/node/43668 you can find the Call for papers for a 2012-03 conference on Early Modern Social Networks, 1500-1800 (bolding within quoted passages  mine):
Quote:
The Early Modern Center of the University of California at Santa Barbara invites paper proposals for our eleventh annual conference, “Early Modern Social Networks, 1500-1800.” The conference will take place on March 16-17, 2012 at UCSB and will feature keynote speakers Ann Blair (Harvard University), Elizabeth Eger (King’s College London), and James Raven (University of Essex).

The word “network” is more likely to call to mind computer connection than the “glittering net-work” of a spider-web (E. Darwin, The Botanic Garden, 1781) or a “Mantle of blacke silke” (Book of Robes, 1600). What is the link between such “curious Piece[s] of network” (Addison, Spectator 275, 1712) and contemporary social networking? These older uses of network illuminate the development of early modern techniques of loose connection.

...
Quote:
Possible topics include: knowledge networks, (such as the Royal society, libraries, salons, and coffeehouses); secret societies; clubs; literary coteries; epistolary correspondents; religious communities (including sacramental practices); print and publication networks; gift communities (patronage, the ward system); trade networks (such as the East India Company, the Royal Exchange, workers’ guilds, black markets); colonial administration; infrastructure expansion (the post, turnpikes, canals); financial organizations (stock markets, insurance); and others we have not anticipated.

Gli amici aretini di Giovanni Tortelli
Messina, Centro interdipartimentale di studi umanistici, 2010, pp. LIX, 145, tavv. VIII
ISBN 978-88-87541-96-0 - Euro 50,00

No, I didn't write an email and then wait etc. just to be able to test that database. I prefer lower thresholds. At least for testing.

Welcome to a new union catalogue of sixteenth-, seventeenth-, and eighteenth-century correspondence, now in public beta!

Created by the Cultures of Knowledge Project with generous funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Early Modern Letters Online — EMLO — is a combined finding aid and editorial interface for basic descriptions of early modern correspondence. This public prototype combines calendars of eight contributing collections. However, with the continuing addition of metadata on letters — manuscript, printed, and digital — by other individuals, projects, and repositories, EMLO aims to become the first freely available union catalogue of these often elusive documents. Search or Browse our existing collections, and find out how you can Contribute...

Doing a quick search over all fields shows: the second alternative is true:

RES: Ep. Jean Lemaire de Belges (2012)

Seen/received thanks to Magda Campanini:
Quote:

There is a CFP for a York 2016-03 conference on Epistolary cultures – letters and letter-writing in early modern Europe available at http://blogging2.humanities.manchester.ac.uk/alcgradschool/epistolary-cultures/ .

Quote:
From the place of Cicero’s intimate letters in the development of Renaissance humanism, to the knowledge networks of merchants,

collectors and scientists, to the role of women in the republic of letters, recent years have seen a flowering of studies on the practice of

letter-writing in Early Modern Europe, as well as major editing projects of early modern letters – Hartlib, Comenius, Scaliger, Casaubon,

Browne, Greville, and the EMLO and Cultures of Knowledge projects. This conference will explore the manifold aspects of early modern

letter-writing in the sixteenth and seventeenth century in its Latin and vernacular forms. It will consider topics such as the intellectual

geographies of letter-writing, the connections between vernacular and Latin letter cultures, questions of genre, rhetoric and style, as

well as the political, religious, and scientific uses of letters.

RES: Cavalli on Kaborycha: It. Women 1375-1650
Reply #52 - 07.06.2016 at 09:13:28

Jennifer Cavalli on:
Lisa Kaborycha: A Corresponding Renaissance : Letters Written by Italian Women, 1375-1650, New York : Oxford University Press 2015   |   ISBN 978-0-19-934243-3
("H-Italy" 2016-06)

Quote:
Kaborycha’s criteria in selecting letters was to offer “snapshots of individual women’s lives and illuminate aspects of Renaissance society and culture as experienced by women as a whole” (p. 24). There are a total of fifty-five letters throughout the eight chapters. The addressees of the letters include family members, both male and female, lovers, confessors, friends, and spouses. Each chapter ranges in number of letters from five (2: “Humanism and Its Discontents”) to nine (5: “Love and Friendship”), and the dates range from Catherine of Siena with a 1378 letter (chapter 1, letter 1) to Elena Lucrezia Corner Piscopia with a 1679 letter (chapter 8, letter 55). Each chapter begins with introductory context that addresses the letters as a whole and what they show with respect to the chapter titles: 1: “The Active Versus the Contemplative Life”; 2: “Humanism and Its Discontents”; 3: “Governing the Household/Governing the State”; 4: “Mothers and Children”; 5: “Love and Friendship”; 6: “Literature and Leisure”; 7: “Art: Patrons and Painters”; 8: “Inquiring Minds: Science and Philosophy.” The background of each author is carefully reconstructed and letters are set in both the larger context of the author’s literary and epistolary production and the particular context of the selected letter’s contents. Some of the women included in the volume wrote many letters, such as Veronica Gambara and Vittoria Colonna. In such cases, Kaborycha sticks to the expressions that characterize the chapter headings. With Colonna, who appears in chapter 5, Kaborycha explains that her selection was determined by highlighting Colonna’s relationship with Michaelangelo and thus her interest in the visual arts, instead of “exquisite examples of epistolary style, potent expressions of feeling, or descriptions of striking contemporary events” (p. 26). In other cases, the letter that appears in the volume is the only surviving letter of the author, such as in the case of Marietta Corsini (chapter 5, letter 29). Kaborycha includes voices little heard, such as Cecelia Liconella (chapter 5, letter 28) and Margherita Aratori (chapter 7, letter 45). Moreover, while some of the authors are well known for other types of writing, such as Veronica Franco (chapter 4, letter 24) and Olimpia Fulvia Morata (chapter 1, letter 5), the focus on epistolary production brings a complexity to women’s lived experience, at times revealing personal and professional struggle, as well as a variety of motivations and various modes of self-representation. For example, the widow Maria Salviati’s motivation for her 1531 letter to a Giovanni (chapter 3, letter 17) was to resist family pressure to remarry. Cassandra Chigi, on the other hand, looks to her mother and family resources to ease the economic constraints of raising seven children in the country after her husband was banished from Siena in 1539 (chapter 4, letter 23). The painter Artemisia Gentileschi focuses her letter to a patron on her professional persona and abilities, revealing extensive knowledge of the business aspect of the art world (chapter 7, letter 48). Responding to a request for a discount, Gentileschi writes, “I must say that the higher the price, the harder I will strive to make a painting pleasing to Your Most Illustrious Lordship and which will suit my taste and yours” (p. 228).
