How to get registered as a member of W4RF
22.03.2007 at 12:25:05

As there were today (2007-03-22) already two cases where somebody registered to this forum and soon afterwards posted things that are contrary to the Registration agreement for this forum (one case of commercial spam, one case of pornography, both completely unrelated to renaissance intellectual history), and as neither I (nor whosever else monitors and administrates this forum) do not want to spend too much time monitoring this forum: as of now I disabled self-registration to this forum.
Sorry about that.
But else either I'd not have found time for doing things unrelated to W4RF or the risk would have been very high that you, the legitimate members and readers of this forum would have been flooded with postings unrelated to what you can/should expect to see here.

Of course everybody who wants to become a member of this forum in order to post here about anything of potential relevance to those interested in Renaissance Intellectual History, or to use the other privileges members have here (most important probably: the option to set email-notifications for categories and/or topics of special interest) is still cordially invited to do so!

The procedure to register is from now on as follows:

  • First: Pease have a look at the Registration agreement. If you think you don't want to accept this agreement: please sent an email with the subject "W4RF: Registration agreement" to hck@lrz.uni-muenchen.de and tell me about the point(s) you don't like. If you think you can accept this agreement: please proceed to the next step.
  • Second: Send an email with the subject W4RF registration to hck@lrz.uni-muenchen.de
Information about your real name, your institutional affiliation (if any), and on whether you want me to post that information in the thread with information about new members, and on why you want to become a member of W4RF would be appreciated, although as of now we don't insist on such information.
Information on the user name you want to choose however is necessary.
  • Third: Once I have received and read such an email one of the administrators will manually register you at W4RF and will send you a provisional password (which you can change anytime after you have logged in to W4RF).
As a default we will keep your email address invisible from guests and from other members of this forum (except administrators). You can make it visible yourself if you want to do so.
  • Sorry about having made registration more cumbersome to you! Any suggestion on how to improve the process is welcome indeed!

I am well aware that the procedure described above is cumbersome. But I guess in comparison it is a not too bad and rather cheap way to avoid robots pushing this forum out of its focus.

Just one example from the rather recent past:
During the last ca. 18 hours there were not less than 80 login attempts by robots which did (wrongly) assume that they had succeeded in registering to this forum. And according to google (tests/searches between 2008-07-28 and 2008-08-01) the login-IDs used by these robots were registered with in between some 1000 (in the case of the login ID "alexPopkinzs") and probably several tens of thousands (in the case of the login-ID "MeinLova") forums. And as they seem to be used rather exclusively to foster the sales of (pseudo-)pharmaceuticals  and software unrelated to the study of renaissance intellectual history: IMO this shows (once again) that sticking to the above mentioned procedures for registration (by the administrators of this forum) and accepting them (by the users of this forum) is a not that bad way to keep Web4Ren Forum (W4RF) a resource where most of the content is indeed related to "information of potential relevance to those interested in Renaissance Intellectual History".
So: Thanks for your patience and understanding!
