I was born in Milan in 1970. I have graduated from the University of Milan in philosophy in 1996, the dissertation (on medieval political metaphors) won also the Pacchi prize (1996-’97).
I have continued my studies with a Master in Economics at the Bocconi University and a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Milan (with a thesis on the medieval and modern controversies on the theoretical-political consequences of the original sin). During these years I was holding several fellowships. I was conducting research at the Philosophy Department of the University of Milan, where I have held numerous seminars (between 2002 and 2007); I have studied one year in Paris (2001-2002, École des Hautes Études, sec. Sciences Religieuses). Afterwards, I have won a two-year postdoctoral scholarship in Turin at the "Firpo Foundation – Center for Political Studies".
At present I am Humboldt research fellow at the Seminar für Geistesgeschichte und Philosophie der Renaissance in Munich, and my research theme is Political Philosophy in Vernacular between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. On this topic I have organized, together with Prof. Thomas Ricklin, a conference entitled "Politics and Vernacular. Political Thought and Linguistic Plurality Between the Middle Ages and Humanism" (Historisches Kolleg, 24-25 November 2008).
My main research interests are medieval and early modern political philosophy (starting with Augustine), the relationship between theology and politics in the Late Middle Ages, the metaphors of power and the relationship between literature and political thinking. The connections between the Middle Ages and modernity in this respect are much more strong than it is generally assumed. Thus, no genealogy of theories of power can avoid taking in consideration medieval authors and their themes.
I have written extensively on these subjects: the monographies Il corpo vivente dello Stato. Una metafora politica, Bruno Mondadori, 2006 (dealing mostly with Marsilius of Padova, Machiavelli and Hobbes), and La questione del potere. I teologi e la teoresi politica nella disputa tra Bonifacio VIII e Filippo il Bello, forthcoming in the political series of the Firpo Foundation, (with emphasis on John Quidort and Giles of Rome), and a series of articles, among which most recent ones are "Si stetissent primi parentes. Elementi di un modello politico tra filosofia ed esegesi", in "Archives d’Histoire Doctrinale et Littéraire du Moyen-Âge, Vrin, Paris (2006) and "Inquirere veritatem. Osservazioni sui prologhi dei trattati politici di Giovanni di Parigi, Egidio Romano, Giacomo di Viterbo (1301-1303)", in "Il Pensiero Politico", Olschki, Firenze (2007).
I have also edited (together with S. Simonetta) a volume of texts and studies on late thirteenth century political writing Bonifacio VIII e Filippo il Bello. Scritti politici di una disputa, Lubrina 2004. In the field of the historiography of medieval philosophy I have edited an anthology entitled Medioevo in discussione. Temi, problemi, interpretazioni del pensiero medievale, Unicopli 2001 and a university textbook (co-edited with Mt. Fumagalli) Profilo del pensiero medievale, Laterza 20042. Also forthcoming is the first Italian edition of the Tractatus de potestare regia et papali of John Quidort of Paris (Marietti, Spring 2009) and an article entitled Marsilius Minor. Other Writings of Marsilius, in Cary J. Nederman-G. Moreno Riaño, ed. by, Companion to Marsilius of Padua, Brill 2009.
I am member of the "Société Internationale pour l’Étude de la Philosopie Médiévale" (SIEPM), of the "Società per lo studio del pensiero medievale" (SISPM) and of the "Associazione Italiana degli Storici del Pensiero Politico" (AISDP). I also take part in different research groups, like the "Libertas ecclesiae", (dir. Stéphane-Marie Morgain) of the " Centre Histoire et Théologie de l’Université de Toulouse " and the " Politisches Denken und literarische Form (dir. O. Hidalgo), Regensburg University, project of the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" DFG.
I'm invited by the research group Political Languages in Middle Ages. Semantical Approaches (Founded by the Leibniz Prize of the DFG) of the Frankfurt Goethe University to hold a lecture about "Brunetto Latini and New Political Languages in 13th century in Italy)
I was invited by the Chair of Political Philosophy of "Università del Piemonte Orientale" (Alessandria) to hold a lecture entitled Agostino e la disobbedienza
